Could one of you fine folks inform me on how best to install a 10 micron w/f separator on an outboard? Boat is and Azure AZ-210 with 2005 Yamaha Z175HPDI. GLM Marine products look good without the brand name mark-up. Oh, do I need the 1/4" NPTF Ports or the 3/8" FYI: I tend to opt for discreet installs, not the "Hey look at my billet bright red blinged out filter housing"...not that there is anything wrong with that

Thanks,
-JP

Mount it where you can see it and get at it easily to service/change the cartridge and so fuel lines don't rub or interfere with steering or other stuff. My unit uses 1/4" fittings but maybe some larger units call for 3/8". Just use whatever it calls for. I believe the fuel/water separating filters are the best preventive maintenance items so far. Good Luck!

Thanks Robert. Fuel issues seem to be the main culprit of HPDI problems. So I would need to mount it in the engine well where the fuel bulb is? Remember, first season with a marine engine, although I have automotive skills.

I mounted mine between the tank and bulb.it has been sugested on these forums to mount it after the bulb as its easier to pump the fuel through the filter rather than allowing the suction of the bulb to pull the fuel through the filter.mine seems to work fine as is, but I may change it to after the bulb if I have some issues again this year priming when its cold,30s,40s and the bulb is slow to expand after being squeezed.

You can't afford to skimp on this area as the filter is need. I would go with the RACOR style so you can see the fuel and if there is water or junk you can see it. They also have a drain on the bottom. Just make sure yo mount the intake to the intake side and the the outlet to the outlet side. I had a dealer mount mine wrong and I was mad enough that I called RACOR to confirm there was a problem. The tech told me that it would filter junk/dirt that way but would stop water.

Just mount the unit on the transom wherever is convenient so you can change/service the canister and so your fuel lines don't rub, kink or interfere with the steering or other stuff. Mine is mounted between the bulb and the motor, so when I dump or change the cartridge I can use the bulb to refill my unit, works fine this way. My unit is a Walmart($27)item and has worked just fine but the Racor and Yamaha units may be better, and definitely cost more! I don't get much water/debris in my fuel so I've been just dumping my canister in a clean container to see what's in it, screw it back on, fill it up, good to go. Probably a good idea to carry a spare cartridge in your boat just in case you need it. Good Luck!

Re: Water / fuel separator

Do they units come with mounting hardware, barbs, etc? I can see that I don't want to use my favorite thread accessory with fuel lines...teflon tape. right? Transom is the vertical surface that the outboard is mounted on, correct. I want to mount the filter on the inside of that wall, not the engine facing side, correct?

Re: Water / fuel separator

One more question , for now. Do I measure the inside diameter of the fuel line or O/D to determine 1/4" or 3/8" model?

Re: Water / fuel separator

You'll need 2 barbs and 2 plugs, whatever size is called for, and use the teflon pipe compound in the tube, not the tape, all from ACE hardware or similar. You'll need a couple of stainless steel screws(ACE hardware) of the appropriate size and length to hold the unit on to the Inside of your transom. You'll have to cut your existing fuel line and attach them to the barbs. Maybe some hose clamps of appropriate size for your fuel lines to secure them onto the barbs. This is really an easy installation, just take your time and don't screw it up. You know the old saying, "measure twice, cut once". Good Luck!
