Are these all about the same or do people have particular preferences for one reason or another? I know Yamaha makes one that connects up to the fuel management gauge, but I don't have that. Wondor though if it is a worthy addition.

Thanks

Re: Water/Fuel Seperator Filters Created Equal?

Hi,
I have the "Yamaha" water/fuel separator, "Deluxe Fuel/Water Separator with Alarm", but I have not the alarm probe installed. I use a "Navman 3100 Fuel" fuel management guage instead of Yamaha guage.
http://www.navman.com/marine/products/fuel/index.html
I have a Yamaha F115 4-stroke and use the Yamaha water/fuel separator nr MAR-24560-00-00, I have a clear bowl but not the water warning probe installed. I have my water/fuel separator mounted so I can see the clear bowl when I open the rear bench so I can easily see with my own eyes if water in the bowl. So a water sensing probe is not needed in my case.

The Yamaha water/fuel separator is actually made by Racor, it is only a Yamaha decal on it.
http://www.parker.com/RACOR/PRODUCTTABLES/TABLE-MARINE-GAS01.JPG
I belive it is the 320R-RAC-01 I have.

A water/fuel separator is for sure almost a must but one with a clear bowl is not neccesary and not a water sensing probe either. A Fuel management guage is nice to have but my Navman 3100 Fuel has to be calibrated at first and then after 100 hours, after 500 hours the fuelflow transducer must be changed. It can display fuel flow per hour, and fuel economy if connected to a speed source (GPS for example). There are many other things this fuel management instrument can display but I will not go into that here. As far as I know the Yamaha fuel management guage can display the two basic things as a Navman 3100 Fuel: fuel flow per hour and fuel economy. The fuel economy is displayed the same on both: nautical mile/liter (or gal), not liter (or gal) per nautical mile. So on both instruments You want as high value as possible in fuel economy mode since You want to be able to travel as far as possible per liter (or gal). This will give You big surprise probably since at least I thougt my most economical speed (before I got the Navman 3100 Fual) was aboout 20 knots. But it was actually at 25 knots according to my Navman instrument.

Probably the Floscan digital fuel management meter is the best but it is very expensive.
http://www.floscan.com/ModelSelection/marine/models/multifunction/series9000.html

/Bo

Check out the March 2004 issue of Trailer Boats magazine. They tested a number of popular spin on fuel filters. Tempo was the best buy and Racor held the most water before passing it on to the motor. They said no filter stopped the water when it filled up.

Their recommendation was to buy any brand spin on filter assembly, then use the appropraite and expensive Racor element with bowl, since Racor makes various models to fit other brands. That way you have a choice between the expensive Racor or the inexpensive aftermarket element. With a complete Racor setup, you can only use the $20+ Racor replacement element.
