Few months ago I attempted too change my lower unit impeller. Doing this a number of times successful in past. This time around I had issues.
Changing impeller put boat into water using local, and after a number of fishing trips noticed temp rising . All systems of a N.G.impeller
This happened two times. Boat sits at my home on a trailer. Two times I changed impeller the rubber fins were melted too casing ?
Each time I drop lower unit I dropped gear oil and noticed water mixing ?
After 2 times I had enough and did want too cause gear damage, I brought too a shop I use at times.
He changes again, says he filled gear oil and full. He said I forgot too install a gasket which caused water too enter
Had no reason too doubt man.
After using boat 1/2 dozen times it ran fine. This morning decided too check fluid level in lower unit and was surprised a lot of water came out. Not milky when it mixes with oil all water then a very little amount of oil came out ????????
I am not sure if shop was bull shitting me and never filled fluids and running on water ?? or this is another issue that must be addressed
Will be checking lower unit regularly making sure no water is mixing but in mean while what should I be searching for ?

I hope no damage was done too gears , everything shifts fine, and boat runs great

thanks for your advise, AL in Orlando

The internal leak had washed all of the oil out of the drive unit except for some trapped in the top of the case.

Always use a water pump kit, not just the impeller, always use a manual if not sure what your doing.

I would be surprised if everything is fine.

If your dead set on testing more then refill the unit with oil, hook up some muffs and run the boat low RPMs in gear for a few minutes. Let it sit a while for water to settle and then recheck the oil to see if it's contaminated. Do not have any kids or animals around when your doing this test.

Pull the drive, drain the oil/water out and pressure test... Only then will you know where the water is getting in/oil getting out...
