Hi I have a 1959 evinrude 35 lark. I just got this motor not to long ago took a while to get running (pulling), rebuilt the carb and set the needles, runs great well I think it does. I checked the plugs after running it in the pond and the top looks good the bottom one is clean as a whisle and has water droplets on it. So I told my self ok let me change the head gasket before it gets worse. Well after breaking two bolts and fighting with all the other ones finally got it back togther, put it on muffs and ran nice at idles. Got it in the pond and it ran really nice too great pickup on it. Got back home checked the plugs same thing. What should I check next? Should I just run it like this and see if it will seal itself? Any help will be great.

It will not "heal itself" in my opinion. Only get worse. Is the cylinder head flat ??
Check it on a surface plate with some spotting blue. Alternatively a piece of glass and some really fine sandpaper.

Six of one and half a dozen of the other.
For the price of the head gasket I would make sure that the head was good.

Should not need it on the head gasket. (my opinion though)
