Water in cylinder

I recently rebuilt my 1993 40 hp Evinrude. For the first couple hours of break-in I kept the rpm's at 1500 and below, then I tried to take it up to 3500 rpm's but at WOT I only got 2500 rpm's. I started checking the motor out to find the problem and the spark plug in the top cylinder was completely clean, so I am assuming I am getting water into that cylinder. The compression checks out OK in both cylinders, around 130 psi. Since the compression is OK I think the head gasket is OK, I just rebuilt it and the block was not cracked, where else could the water be coming from?

ftthom,

That's the most common place.

A leaking side cover gasket may contribute.

Are you sure its completely clean? No water? How about fuel? Completely dry? Or is it clean but has water on it?

Good luck!

Re: Water in cylinder

Sounds like no fuel to that cyl. If you did a good job on the rebuild I doubt there is any prob with water getting into the cyl. No fule can be from a misaligned gasket on the reed valve plate or carb plate. When you crank over the engine hold your hand over carb and see if there is vacuum. If so the gaskets should be good check carb float. Good Luck

Re: Water in cylinder

I believe the cylinder is getting fuel. I switched plugs and ran it a few minutes and the fouled plug I put in the top cylinder came out much cleaner. I checked compression again and it is still 130 psi. Since the plug came out cleaner I still think I am getting water in that cylinder. Is it possible water is getting in at the head gasket even though compression is good?

Re: Water in cylinder

ftthom....your problem may lay in the bottom cylinder if the plug is fouling in the bottom cylinder. The fouling can be caused by to much gas or a very weak spark. Make sure both sparks from both spark plug wires will jump a 1/2" gap with a very hot white spark.

Did you rebuild the carbs as part of the rebuild?
