Hi Guys,

Used to be on this forum as Jayh and am back after several years of time away.

Picked up a 2000 Merc 20hp a bit ago, the owner said it had been sitting a couple years when he put it in the water it ran for a minute and stopped. Anyways, threw it on the hose and wasn't pumping water, pulled the LU and found a spun water pump. Well, got the new pump in it today and found I was leaking water just about everywhere. Of the most concern to me was the leakage around the spark plugs. I only ran it a minute but had water in both cylinders. Not to mention several leaks around the side plate, along with loose bolts. I'm thinking when he ran it he cooked the gaskets, at least thats what I'm hoping and that there isnt any big damage. I need to run a compression test, but is it safe to assume I can get new gaskets and be good to go? Best place to find them?

I work on outboards on a regular basis, but this is the first time I've run into this.

Thanks!

If it's been seriously cooked, and it sounds like it, then I would be replacing piston rings too... And check that cylinders are still round, and well as pistons. Check the crank journals for burning, and exhaust covers will probably need replacing.... along with ever gasket in the engine....

The place to look for parts would be your local Merc dealer... Get friendly with him. :D:D:D:D

Good luck, I think you're going to need it....
