Water in cylinders

II have a 88 4 cyl. 3.o litre omc Cobra and had problems with it running so I had the guy who runs the local boat livery take a look at it . I got a call that when he pulled a spark plug there was a sign of water in the cylinder. Other than a blown head gasket (which he thought it was) is there anything else that would cause it?
Also any idea of a estimated cost for repair.

Leaking exhaust manifold (gasket leak, rusted or cracked) is a likely suspect too. I wouldn't rule out exhaust flappers either. Can't guess prices before you know for sure what is wrong. And are you planning to dui.

Can't do it myself I don't have a inside place big enough to work on it . I live in NW Pa. where you need inside cover you never know what kind of weather will be coming over the hill !!! I guess I better find a place local that can do the work and let them give me the bad news . :>(

A compression check on the cylinders should help ya' tell if the head gasket is blown ... You should be able to knock that out in the driveway in between batterings from the local squall lines :)

possible causes of water in cylinders:
blown head gasket
cracked block
cracked head
cracked exhaust manifold
leaking riser gasket
cracked riser
lack of shutters
