Depends on which one is leaking. Drain the gear lube, then do a pressure test. That's how you find a leak.

Have you pulled the drive and checked the bellows for water? That's usually a good place to look first.

No I have not pulled it yet. I was waiting for the bellows that I ordered to come in. I ordered OEM bellows and snap rings. How do I go about doing a pressure test? I imagine I would need some sort of fitting that would go in the dipstick hole or the lower drain hole. How mush psi do I need to put to it? I might be able to rig up some sort of pressure tester.

Thank you. I was looking for that but could not remember where I read it. I have a cylinder leak down pressure tester for cars. I am hopeing that one of my spark plug hoses has the same thread. If so I can pressurize it. If not I will need to come up with the correct thread. I also have a automotive coolant tester that I could pop the hose off and hook to some sort of fitting.

You don't use a leak down tester on a drive, and no it doesn't have an adapter that will fit a drive. and you don't hook a compressor to it either. You only need 15 psi max. A hand pump works fine.

Also no water came out when I pulled the plug. It just had a hershey brown color to it. To me it looks like it has water in the oil. I have never dealt with an outdrive so I dont know what a normal color should be in the outdrive. I just bought the boat not to long ago. I dont know what type of oil was in it. What is a good color for this used gear oil? I have lucas synthetic to put in it and it is def not that color.

I have no clue what happens to Lucas oil when water or just hard use does to the oil.
