Water in Engine Cowling

I am getting an large amount of water in my Force 50 engine cowling. I have raised the engine, but it doesn't help. My repairman says I have a "piece of junk" for a boat that throws water up and into the lower cowling which pumps it into the engine cowling. The result of the water in the upper cowling is that it splashes into the carb and the motor drowns out. My boat is a shallow draft fiberglass bass boat, but would think that a Force 50 could run on it OK. The pump was replaced and it didn't help. Anyone have any ideas. I surely hope repairman is off base here?

Kind of hard to believe that the boat would throw that much water up into the cowling. I think I would get a second opinion. Or you could run it in a tub of water with the top cover off and see if you see any water leaks. Not unusual for water to leak from a bad gasket into the cowling area.

First get another repairman. He just doesn't want to be bothered and likely doesn't know what the problem could be.

With someone to help you, run the boat with the cover off. Check for leaks at the base gasket under the block and at the exhaust cover gasket. Maybe even the head gasket. See if any of these is squirting water out into the engine compartment.

If you find no leaks there, remove the rear shroud and check the cork gasket under the idle relief vent. This is a long aluminum piece with a circular tube that protrudes through the shroud.

However, a bad gasket there could fill the shroud with water but I doubt it would fill the lower cowl because the water would spill out the notch for the shift rod before it could ever get into the cowl. My bet is a leaking gasket on the engine.
