Hi Gang.
Thanks to Vinney for pointing me in the right
direction to solve my Water in the oil problem.
I found that the manifolds and risers are ok but the gaskets that connect them were leaking.I installed the new gaskets and pressure tested at 25 psi,and no leaks. throughout this process i removed the valve covers and cleaned the whitish/gray sludge out. Now that i have the motor all back together I have a question. how many oil changes will i need to do to get ALL the water out of the crankcase????

Re: Water in Engine oil

The water will boil out of it first time out. I'd run it for a couple of hours, then change the oil. Ought to be okay after that.

Re: Water in Engine oil

Thanks dieselwalt
Will the motor get Hot enough running it on the trailer to boil out the water or do i need to run it under a load at high RPM in the water. I have run it on the trailer with a hose hooked to the lower unit but cannot get it hot enough to open the thermostat.. The test I am using is to heat up a frying pan and pour the oil on it after each change. the water of course will boil out. Thanks for your help.

Re: Water in Engine oil

MagicBandit
I assume you have changed the oil once already. I am not sure motor get hot enough to boil water. My engine runs from 150 to 170 boiling is 212 degrees. Also my engine even if it did boil would just re condense as engine cools off. My motor has no PCV valve to remove air from engine. It does have a breather where any blow-by can except. If you have already changed oil once I agree run it for a while and then change it again and should be ok. What type and size engine do you have??

It'll be a few changes before the oil goes back to being dark again. Have no fear. Just change it more often. It should get less and less milky. If it does not, you still have a problem.

Re: Water in Engine oil

magicbandit.. not sure on your engine, but my 454s run about 220*F oil temp and go to about 240*F with WOT blasts. I think a good hard run with your 7.4l will get you over the magic 212*F mark and clean your oil. Another thought would be to add a oil temp gage. Really easy and cost me $60 per engine for a gaffrig gage and sending unit. No matter what, I would change the oil at least 3 times.

Good luck

BT

Re: Water in Engine oil

It should get up to temp. on a hose unless the thermostat is stuck open volvo engines run hotter than most mercs higher thermostats I would guess ,but a 454 will warm up on a hose

Re: Water in Engine oil

Yes water temp will eventually reach operating temp when running engine on the hose, but I don't think you will see oil temps over 212 on the hose. My oil temp gages barely move when run on hose. Can't get enough rpms to build the heat in the oil while running on garden hose.

BT

Change the Oil three Times. The first couple times use recycled Oil,7 Qts of oil a change can get costly. Then use Amsoil Synthetic 15W-40 This oil has a water inhibator in it ( Made just for Boats)Here is there web site www.amsoil.com It's listed under Syntyetic, Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine
