Water in fuel

I'm looking for a little help before I take my boat to the shop. I was out on the water yesterday when my 90 horse (1999) Johnson began to sputter. My fuel separator inidcated I had water in the fuel. Since I was out by the Skyway, and I wanted to make sure I could make back to the ramp, I ran the motor sputtering back to the boat ramp. Wide open, I could not run any faster than 25 mph but I got there. The motor sounded terrible and would not idle when I arrived at the ramp. There was also a strong smell of fuel like there was a leak. More than likely, the fuel was shooting out of the carb as described below.

This evening, I drained the fuel separator and the carbs. The motor started up;however, the top carb on the left hand side (if you were sitting in front of the motor) started shooting fuel out a small hole at the top of the carb. The hole was located to the left of the right main screw that mounts the carb. Anyone have any idea as to why this is happening and how to correct it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Water in fuel

I figured out why the gas was shooting out of the top of carb. The carb float seems to have been stuck. I'm sure the water and crap being sucked into the fuel system had something to with the float sticking. The carb is back on and the motor is running fine now.

Anyone have any idea on how to deal with water getting into the fuel system? The shop says there is not a lot I can do about it but keep the tank full and use fuel stabilzer. A freinds boat has been in the shop twice in the last six months with the same water-fuel problem. He solved it by running a 6gallon exterior fuel tank. I'm not ready to give up on running my boat's 26 gallon fuel tank.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Water in fuel

run your tank almost dry, the remove the fuel sender, and clean out the tank. Don't use a shop vac.

What kind of water separtating rig do you have? Does it have a draining bowl? If so, did you drain it as soon as you realized there was water in there?

I deal with condensation / water in the fuel by draining the bowl every time I use the boat. I've never been able to just look at the bowl and tell, so I just drain and look at what I get. I get a couple ounces of water ever few hours of operation early in the season from the winter storage (although I fill as full as possible and use stabilizer for winter storage) and if I'm not using the boat very much (i.e. more chance for condensation). If i"m using the boat regularly, condensation is very minimal.

Re: Water in fuel

Any suggestions on how to run the tank almost dry? I had just top off the tank prior to my problem. I'm thinking I have about 15-19 gallons of gas in the tank. I was going transfer the gas 5 gallons at a time from my boat to my truck but I really don't want my truck to have a similar problem with the water in the fuel.

Once I have the tank empty, how do I clean it out and with what?
