Water in gas tank?!?!

I have a 1997 Johnson V4 115HP. Started having some problems this season. Engine usually starts fine and idles fine. Usually works great out of the hole when hitting the throttle. Sometimes it stalls out of the hole when hitting the throttle as if it is not getting gas. Always starts right up again. May be fine out of the hole then or may stall again. Runs great at any speed if it does not stall out of the hole. I have checked the fuel line and it is OK. I have replaced the fuel filter inside the engine and replaced the water seperator filter in the fuel line. Do you think that I have water in my gas tank that is causing this problem? If it is water in the gas tank, what can I put in the gas to dry it up without hurting the engine?

Not an expert here; I'm sure they'll be along. I have twin 1996 Evinrude Ocean Pros, 175 HP. Carbed just like yours. I chased what I thought was a gas problem for six months. :( Then someone on this site said they thought it sounded like a Power Pack. Mine did everything you discribed plus it would mysteriously cut out at 4500 RPMs or so on occassion. Always would restart. As they say in the business; "it's either gas or electrical." :p Hope this helps. ;)

Steve,
Try your motor with a portable 6 gal tank with fresh gas to eliminate your fuel doubts. Is there a VRO on your motor?

Take that fuel in the water separator ,and dump it in a clean pan.If it is only slightly water contaminated, then you can likey rule that out.Run the engine with a timing light pointed at your face when this thing is acting up and that might tell you if you have an ignition problem.Move it from plug wire to wire and compare.PLEASE BE CAREFULL.Getting bit by these igntion systems hurts .Next remove the airbox and shoot a little 50 to 1 premix into the throat of each carb until you find the one that is'nt working.

Hi Steve, Happy Holidays to you and yours.
I'm far from an expert on boat motors, but will add a suggestion that has worked for me more than once, on a lot of different motors. I get a can of what in my area is called "Sea Foam". It's an additive that can be used in any type of gas, and oil, 2- or 4-stroke. If available in your area, give it a try, as I know for sure it won't hurt a thing. Only takes about 1 ounce per gallon straight gas and about 2 ounces per oil/gas mix. You can even mix it stronger without hurting a thing. Good luck on your motor. marvc

Look for the Sea Foam at your local NAPA Auto Parts Store.
