Water in Gas

I have a 1988 120hp Johnson. I think I may have some water in my fuel tank, can someone please tell me what the symptoms are for water in fuel. The problem I am having is that when I am cruising the engine will just cut out and the continue, it does not stall except when it is idleing every now and then it will run rough and then stall. Thanks

first if you have a built in tank, you absolutely need a fuel/water separating filter. siphon of some fuel from the bottom of the tank. let it settle in a clear container, you will see separation with water on the bottom.

you could also have an air leak in a connection, clogging fuel vent, weak fuel pump. dirty carbs, and old fuel lines.

Just thinkin,you could try running the engine on a 6 gallon tank and see if you still have the problem, will tell you if you actually have a tank problem.

How old is the gas in the tank? We were told by our mechanic not to use gas that is over 90 days old. Ethanol attracts water, and when enough water is absorbed by ethanol-blended gasoline, the ethanol and water solution separates from the gasoline (phase separation), with the gasoline floating to the top.This can result in a layer of water with a high-concentration of ethanol at the bottom of
the fuel tank.
