Last fall I winterized my boat treated the fuel and put a new fuel filter on. I have been out twice and everything was ok but It seems to miss a bit. It started getting worse so I switched the plugs and cap, didnt seem any better. I decided to see if the fuel filter had trapped any water. I removed it and dumped the fuel into a clear jug. Just from the little fuel filter I had over two tablespoons of water in this small sample of fuel! I have entire YEARS without building up that much water in the filter. I put a new filter on but I dont know if it helped. I have not had a chance to run it yet. My point, you REALLY have to be carful with the blended fuels. And No the Oring on the tank isnt leaking. That was the first thing I checked.

Re: Water in gas!

Im an auto mechanic for a ford dealer and just recently weve had a rediculous amount of people coming in with there cars contaminated with water in there fuel.... and Im sorry emc but replacing the fuel filter isnt going to fix the problem.... Ur going to need to drain the tank and put fresh fuel in it... U may be able to put Fuel Dry additive in but i personally dont trust that stuff...

With all the high water across the country I am not surprised. I have seen gas stations have to get their tanks pumped out due to water.

You might want to start by getting a jar full every time you fuel up and let it sit 60 minutes...... if there is water you will see it.

Fuel/water separator, no better time than now to add one!

It does have a water seperating fuel filter. Thats why it trapped the gas.

to the others, do you really think there is that much more gas in there? Almost all of the gas isnt but two weeks old. I hate to dump it. I think I will try the dry gas idea and run the heck out of it tomarrow.

If it's getting sucked up then you can bet there's at least a pint or two laying in the bottom of the tank that the pickup can't reach.
Tilt your trailer up as high as it will go (until the back is hitting the ground) then use your primer bulb to pump it into a bucket.
Then use metho, ethanol, gas dry, whatever to try & get the rest to mix with the fuel & burn it off with use.
Or you could pull the tank, Yuk.

My plan for this season is to intentionally contaminate my fuel with water before it reaches the boat. Im rather upset with the govts plan to outlaw ethanol free fuel, but at any rate, dump a bit of water in a tank, and the water/ethanol will quickly settle at the bottom. Drain this off, and you have REAL fuel when you're done.

Sounds like with a bit more filtering, you're on your way to some decent boating.

Yeah, real fuel of maybe 80 octane. The ethanol raises the octane rating to what's displayed on pump. Just run the stuff (E10) out regularly and you shouldn't have any major problems. Just make sure the rubber components of your fuel system are fairly new. Even my '88 outboard could use E10 right from the factory.

Nothing in life is certain except change and death--and we're working on death! All you old dinosaurs out there that can't or won't use E10 or E15 are sooner or later going to need to bite the bullet and get over it. Doped gas is here to stay and it is not your government trying to make you miserable.

Add this, add that, do this, do that. Lots of "nangles" (as in I have a nangle) and fuss. As Shakespeare said " Much ado about nothing." ----Just burn what is out there and quit complaining about it.

Well I put some "heet" Gas Dryer in the tank and ran it today. It really seemed to clear up almost immediately after getting thru the no wake zone and getting onto plane. Ran fine the rest of the day. There may be more water in the gas but between the new filter and the heat I think I took care of it. I probably burnt 20 gallons today (2/3 tank). I am not worried anymore. Still amazing how much water the methanol picks up.

This biggest problem I have noticed with ethanol is letting the gas sit and get old, Just burn it. That's what you put it in the boat for. Heck, gas is cheap anyway...right??

Dunno, just fired up the boat today for the first time this season and as usual the gas from last September worked just fine. I've always got something sitting around here for 6+ months at a time and don't have any issues with the E10 going bad or magically creating water. If you're getting water in your fuel chances are good that you bought it that way and should consider getting your fuel elsewhere.

My experience (minus the 6 month old fuel part, I USED my boat WAY too much to have 6 month old fuel!) for 8 years, as well. Ethanol didn't cause this guy's problem. The gas had water in it when he put it in the tank. or the tank already had water in it.

Re: Water in gas!

To maybe clarify a little on my early point... the alky extraction is for use in my small 2-stroke outboard. I ran the E10 stuff last year (only option) and if I were to fill the half gallon fuel tank on the motor, by the end of the week, I'd have a hard time keeping it running it was so overwhelmed with water.
As I seen to end up mentioning in most of my post, I live on a boat so the little outboard gets used at least twice a day (get to shore to go to work, and get back at the end of the night).

It becomes difficult to find a place to responsibly drain a sediment bowl.. and fuel line.. full of water when the boat never leaves the lake.

So, 'just run the stuff out' doesn't really cut it.
I'll give an update on how the 'E-zero' fuel works out for me...
