Scenario : Advised a new member of my boating Club who had just received his father's old boat and a Yam 140 OB to change his gear box as first thing to do. According to him, the oil has not been changed for the past 10 years. Bough a bottle of Mercury 90 grade oil. When both oil plugs were removed to empty the contents, a triple fluid layer of clear water, oil, and more clear water begun to exit.

Is it possible for lower leg to have build water from condensation ? the boat sits in a open patio next to sea when not in use ? The water was not mouth tested to determine if being fresh or salt water, the weird thing was that the drained oil was not contaminated, mixed with water nor being milky emulsified whatsoever. Question : could such scenario be able to happen ?

Have advised owner to remove new gear oil in the next 15-20 run hours to check its condition and see if with water intrusion again...

I don't see condensation, think it has a seal leak, and after sitting long enough the water separates from the oil. Was a vac/pressure test done?

Lower units are sealed.----No such thing as condensation getting in there if seals arte good.---Unit needs teardown and inspection of gears and bearings now.----

Thanks, as this OB it's not mine, will see what comes out of the lower gear case after 15-20 run hours with new gear oil. BTW, the water that came out the 750 mil gear case was around 150 mil. No vacuum pressure tested at all.

If the gears/bearings sat in that water for 10 ys, I would be pulling the unit apart for inspection.

This boat is taken back to terra firme after each salt water outing. A boat living moored with lower leg down it's a different story, much worse if happens to have shot lower leg seals,
