I have a 1995 BW Rage 15 with a OMC 115 TurboJet JEEOB - Engine Runs fine on all 4 cylinders ( Until I connect the flush kit ). When connetced to the flush kit water seeps into the lower 2 cylinders. Compression is good on all 4 so do not suspect head gasket. Prior owner had head gaskets replaced, power head adaptor, water deflectors, and thermostats in 12/02 and ran fine after service. Was wondering if this is a common problem with the rage/OMC 115 Turbo and what the possible root cause would be.

Hi BW and welcome to iboats.

When using the flushetts, the garden hose is putting a lot more pressure into the cooling system of yer engine than the water pump normally would. It is possible that you may have a leaky exhaust cover gasket that only shows up when you apply the flushetts.

Could you give us an idea of why you think water is getting in there while on the flushettes?

Thanks.

Re: Water In Lower Cylinders

Thanks OBJ - That makes sence - Since that seems to be common to both banks - ( assuming a single point failure ) I bougnt the boat "cheap" with the owner knowing that there was a Hyrdo-lock in the power head. Have not had it in the water and was using the flush kit to trouble shoot the hydro-lock. Powerhead runs fine when dry ( No water ) so when 20 psi of fresh water is applied to the water jacket via the flush kit, I get water in the lower cylinders and Oil in the water ( Cylinders were filled with 2 Cyl oil to prevent oxidation ) - BTW - Where is a good source for a comprehensive Severice Manual ( I have the E/J shop manual from Intertec but it does not cover cooling systems.)

Thanks Again,

BW Rage15

Did you just say the powerhead runs fine when dry? I hope I am reading it wrong. If you have been running it without water you probably do have gasket damage as well as water pump, head, etc. Please elaborate.

JR, Thanks for your concern...

30 Seconds Max - The temperature never excceded 137 Deg F at the Head. Also, am having trouble removing the muffler/jacket from the adaptor plate - Removed the Six ( 6) nuts and it seems like it it is " Welded" to the adaptor plate. Suspect prior servive tech used permetex # 1 or there is some other bolt/nut not visiable from the parts manual. Any suggestions ?

ps Awaiting OMC service manual from the outboardwizard via UPS....

BW Rage 15

If you have run it 30 seconds w/o water then I would change the impellor before I used it again. Consider the number of times it has revolved around in those 30 seconds with no lubrication and the heat generated by such action. I would definately change it.

As far as your water leak it looks like you caught it early enough to prevent a rebuild but I would put new gaskets on the powerhead. Good luck.

I have no experience with these jet drives, but try this. Start the the engine first, then turn the water on. You might be flooding the the exhaust housing. Some personal water craft have to be started this way.

Thanks JR - I think the Impeller may be OK - Prior to starting, the crankcase had more oil in in it than Texas and with the water leak so did the Jet drive - But I'll check just to be sure

BW Rage 15 - ps Any Ideas on how to free a stuck muffler ?

Re: Water In Lower Cylinders

The omc turbojet doesn't have an "impeller" like those in the lower unit of an outboard. It gets it's cooling water from behind the stainless steel impeller used for jet thrust. The water is forced into the housing and thru a tube above the impeller back thru the transom and into the engine. There are no rubber impeller blades to dry up ad break off. I was told to start and stop the engine before turning the water on to the fresh water adapter. The folks at turbojetmarineproducts@hotmail.com purchased OMC's inventory of jet parts and have been a great help to me as I am also a new owner of a 15 foot BS rage. Happy jetting!
