I had water in my lower unit because it leaked in through the drain plug.I'm sure that was the problem. I drained and changed the oil after one short trip and fixed the problem. Now that winter is approaching, should I change the oil again to be sure no rust or freezing will occur of will the new oil protect everything. thanks

I would, this way you will possibly remove any water that remained in the unit from the last change, and also to check and make sure any more water didn't come in...

I always change mine out every 3 fishing trips just because I can.

It's only a 25HP, so it will take less than a pint of oil. Just change it regularly..
