water in lower unit

I inherited a 11 ft whaler with a '78 25 hp evinrude that had a worn clutch dog. I bought a 1980 25 hp as a parts motor. The lower unit was in excellent condition. I used the prop shaft, head seal, forward and reverse gears and clutch dog, from the good lower unit and replaced the driveshaft seals, (new) and fixed the clutch dog problem but I am still getting water in the oil. It works great mechanically but after only a thirty minute test run the oil is milky. Does anyone know a good place to start looking for a leak.

If you have an old bike pump you can stick the hose in the fill hole and add pressure to the gearcase and sometimes find leaks. If you do this be very careful not to overpressure the gearcase which can ruin the seals. About 1 or 2 psi is all you need.

The most common cause of water in the foot is re-use of the gaskets under the vent and drain plugs.

Did you put new gaskets in there?

No I didn't. I'll need to get those today. I also saw a gasket set for sale online which included a gasket to go under the water pump. Is a gasket now needed under the pump for 1978 models or was this set for a later model.

Well guys it's about a month later and at least ten foot removals and test runs and I finally got it.:D Thanks to iboats for the information on the removal of a shift lever bushing. I could not have done it without ya'll.
