I am getting water into my gearcase. Not real bad, but never good, I know. Seems to be a small amount. Large pan starts out gray looking but after a couple of days the oil seperates and floats on top. small amount of water at bottom of pan when drained. What is the repair called ? How difficult is it to do ? Can it wait till later or does it have to be fixed asap. I have been using it this way for about 2-3 seasons of light use. Just change oil a little more often. Not right, yeah I know. Motor is a 1974 evinrude 70hp... 3cylinder this model has no in-line fuel filter. Just a screen on fuelpump assembly. Where would you install a inline filer ? just before the pump or after.

I would fix the gear case, water-oil mixture does not have the same lubricating properties as clean oil. If the gears and bearings get damaged, repair will be a lot more costly. Right now you probably just need the seals replaced.
I would get a factory service manual before trying to repair the gear case.

Have the g/c pressure & vacuumed checked before doing anything. That will tell you exactly where it's leaking.
