I launched my 21 ft Sweetwater Pontoon for the 1st time this season yesterday. It is fitted with a Yamaha 75hp, 4 stoke with about 12 hours on it. We had 4 people(includung myself) on the boat and we cruised for about 2+ hours without any problems. We started to head in and 3 of the people changed position and sat in the rear couch lowering the the stern and raising the bow...we started to accelerate and the motor quit and would not retart. I fortunately had a trolling motor and we limped to the nearest marina.
The fact that we ran for 2 hours seems to rule out water initially being in the tank...the mechanic took about a pint of water out of the motor...I dont know how much was in the gas tank. How can the water get in the motor/tank while underway? primer line? Comment/help please.

you had water in the fuel tank when you left the dock.
it happens occasionally on new rigs.
double check the position and condition of the tank vent fitting.
takes a while for water to collect enough in the various filters to finally make it to the VST where the injector rail will pick it up.

Rodbolt...thanks for the response...a couple of clarifying details...this is the 2nd year I've owned and operated this boat and motor, gas tank was full when we launched with fresh gas. How does water get in the gas tank?

It can get in a couple of ways. Through the fuel tank vent. Through the fuel tank fill cap (check the oring and make sure the threads are lightly greased) If you fill the boats tank with portable jerry cans, and especially if you leave the gas cans outside and not garaged, that way to. And then every once in a while the gas station itself will have water in it's fuel tank.
It's recommended to run marine fuel stabilizer with every tankfull nowadays... especially if the boat sits on a dock.

do have the tech double check the water in the fuel alarm thats on the engine.
however with E fuels it sometimes wont trigger.
