I resealed the gear case to my 40hp outboard.
I pumped oil in and ran it for a few minutes in a barrel to be sure that when we got to the lake it would run.
And yes I used new screw washers and one of my big snap on screwdrivers with a wrench to make sure they were tight.
Just to be sure I thought I would drain a little oil to be sure the lower unit was water tight.
The oil was cream colored so I figured water was getting in.
I put the lower unit in a kiddy pool with about 10 pounds of pressure via the plastic screw oil hose coupling and I could see no bubbles anywhere.
Since I do not have a way to vacuum test I took it to the authorized dealer and asked them to just reseal it as I was frustrated and did not have the time.
We really would like to do a little boating this season.
They called me back in about a week and said they tested it and could not find fault with my work.
I paid them for one expensive hour and an impeller they took the liberty of installing.
We took the boat down to the lake and drove around to do a final tune to the carb.
It seemed to run smoothly but after 20 minutes it began to run poorly and drag and no amount of tuning would cause it to run better.
We decided to bring it back home to clean the carb and check the gear case.
In a way I did not want to look but when I let the oil out it was cream colored again.
I don't know if I should part the motor out, look for an other gear case or try to rebuild this one again.
I am tempted to take it back to the dealer but the diagnostics and part cost me over half of the original quote to rebuild and reseal with new seals and bushings.
Are there any quirks to this motor that might cause water to enter the case?
