Well removing the oil drain plug in this 1960 40 HP Gale motor, quite a bit of water streamed out before a greenish creamy oil started coming out,, I have already dropped the lower portion of the lower unit as to replace the water pump, but with the water in the oil , this means the seals are bad? correct ?

if anyone knows let me know
thanks
tim

I would say yes, unless the engine has been stored for a very long period. Then it could be a build up of moisture or poor storage.

In either case, you should replace all the seals while your doing the water pump. It only makes sense.

I agree with the advice re. seal replacement, but before you do that, you might replace the lower unit oil and run it in a tank for a bit. I find this cleans everything out, and it will also tell you if there is indeed a leak (new oil will be milky). I guess the caveat here is that you will probably need to drop the unit again if you end up resealing it -- although I don't think it's absolutely necessary to do that. By the way, don't take out the the single screw on the bottom rear of the unit (not the drain screw) until you are ready to take the whole gearcase apart. Just some thoughts.
