I have a 1988 OMC 2.3 liter ford engine and i am getting water in the oil. Took the head off today and it doesnt seem to be cracked and i changed the head gasket but the old gasket didnt appear to be in bad shape( no holes, rip, or tears). Is there anything else that i could check to see how water is getting into the oil? Any suggestions would be appreciated! I'm trying to look at the exhaust manifold to see if there is anything visibly wrong.

If it's more than a pint of water, you better start looking at a cracked block from improper winterization.

I live in southern Louisiana and the coldest it got last year was 38 degrees. Ran the boat about ten times this season and never had water in oil till the last time i took it out.

How did the valves look? Any rust? Any signs of water getting into the cylinder such as a super-clean piston?

Was the boat towed to some other area with higher altitudes (and lower temperatures) while getting to another warm area? wouldn't be the first time that happened.

Re: Water In Oil

I have replaced the two rubber hoses going down from the riser cause both had split open. When I had it all apart i noticed that the pin was still there in the bottom tube but not the flapper. I ordered a new flapper and replaced it today. Could the missing flapper be what is causing me to get water in the oil? There was a good bit of water the last time i checked. Thanks for all the help.

Do you have it docked where large waves could hit the transom? If so, then possibly.
Did you find the flapper that came lose? I have a flapper come off and actually get lodged down in the Y-pipe and rub a hole right through the cast iron causing a leak.

Another thing to check is your exhaust manifolds for any cracks.
