water in oil

O.K. guys, I took my boat out today after I rebuilt the lower unit and replaced the water impeller and housing. I replced ALL gaskets and O rings and bearings. It is a 1962 evinrude 40 hp ELECTRIC shift gears. The oil in the gear box is still green but not see through any longer. It is green but opaque. Due to water in oil? My question is this now:
If memory serves me correct, when I put the motor back together, it seems to me that there was nothing where the wires come out of the gear box for the electro magnets to stop water going in or oil coming out of that location???? I remember that there is a wire guard exiting the gear box and a plastic piece that is called a "retainer" . Could this retainer be what stops the oil/water from mixing into the gear box? When I put the retainer in place, it does not seem like that would be sealed enough to stop any water at all. It kinda just fits into the hole loosely. Is this suppose to block this hole where the wires go through? If so, maybe it has to be re-adjusted as I do not think it is in there really that great at this time. (not good enough to block any water from going into the gear box). Any thoughts on this? What purpose is this retainer suppose to serve??? Maybe that is why when I filled the lower unit gear case with oil, I got oil coming out of the weep hole above the gear case? Thanks again!

Re: water in oil

I don't know a lot about the electric shift but it sounds like you have found the source of the leak. I would think that the wiring seal would be molded to the wire harness and plug through into the gearbox. Obviously not included as a part of the seal kit. Could you do a pressure or vacuum test to confirm a leak? Hopefully some one with more experience will offer some assistance.
