i have new oil drain and fill gaskets, shift shaft bushing assembly, complete waterpump assembly, thick rubber washer that slides down waterpump shaft and sits on top of water pump,and new o ring seal that snanwiches between both halves. took out for one weekend and boat seemed to be fine. while sitting on trailer awhile later i noticed unit oil dripping down backside of lower half. seem to be coming out from oring gasket. i took apart only to find water in unit. is it possible water entered thru that? if so is there any tricks to seal it, like some gasket sealant? thanks ken ps when i took apart i did notice the o ring was off on the waterpump shaft, looked up into upper unit and there it was. could water have gotten in that way?

i think i'd drain the lub and pressure test the drive. this will help locate the leak.... or, if ya have them separated, you can test ea. half by itself too. then, when reassembled, retest to be sure the seal is good between the upper and lower and that it still holds pressure...

when we initially put back together we filled with lube pressure tested for only 15 or so minutes[now i realize THATS NOT LONG ENOUGH] questio is how do you test when in half? thanks ken

i was wondering if i could fill each half with oil then clamp plug over oil hole then pressure check?

You don't pressure check them with oil in the drive. Drain it first then check and see if the air leaks.
I usually just put some small rubber plugs in the holes of each seciton to check them seperatly.

thanks don. i just figured air would push out the oil. how much pressure? 10 or so lbs? thanks ken

i've been putting 15psi to it. it should hold all day.....
dons' rubber plug idea seems good for testing the halves. for a quick test. i just put my finger over the hole and pumped it up. ya can't hold it for very long though. but if it was leaking, i'd guess that ya would see the gage go down in the min. or so yer able to hold yer finger over it. a rubber plug sure seems like it'd work better though...

the thing on the left is a gear lub pump end that ya screw into your drive. then just some hose w/a gage tee'd in .... the problem i had, was coming up with a gage that read low enough... the hand pump end is a tire stem, ground down to fit the hose....

the thing on the right is a break vac. pump for doing breaks on a car. it applys vacum. i beleive the vac. test is around 5-7hg....
