water in SX drive

I pulled the drain plug and said... "this is not good"...

If there is a leak, I think that it is at the shift linkage... there is a bit of oil coming out, so I assume that water gets in sometimes...

How do I chase a water leak? can I put compressed air into the housing and watch for bubbles or something?

Re: water in SX drive

A quick way to check would be to drain the drive. Put 15psi of air into the drive using some kind of adapter in the oil drain hole. Spray soapy water around the shift shaft and look for bubbles. If its got bubbles, then you know its AT LEAST that spot. The only way to know for sure if there are other leaks are to remove the drive and leak check it. Removing it lets you see the pinion bearing carrier seal near the u joints. See the sticky link on how to make a homemade setup to pressure check your drive. http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser...sure-check-prior-post-233546.html#post1573303
