I went to install a set of smart tabs on my 1993 Renken Seamaster. The mounting brackets have six holes, three top three bottom only 1.5 inches apart. Using the bracket as a template I marked holes and began drilling. All the top holes were fine, gelcoat then wood appeared on the drill bit. As soon as I drilled the bottom mounting holes, water started to weep out. Not much, not a stream, but the wood was wet at the very bottom of the transom. I used a dryer, packed the holes with marine silicone and mounted the tabs. No where else was there any sign of wetness. Is this something I need to take care of or can this be expected with a boat of this age? I checked motor mounting holes, scupper holes, dive platform holes and all seemed well sealed. Any thoughts?
