I own a 2002 Larson 274 Cabrio with DPS outdrive. My unit has the SX-MHP transom assembly. Just removed cover at top of transom ring. Long story short, I am afraid that the two bolt holes going through transom that hold this on have been taking on water for the season.
I am pretty knowledgeable with repairs and can get through most things; but what is the best way to ensure my fear (without a moisture meter)? I'm not for sure about the rap-a-tap-tap on the transom to detect differences.
I purchased the boat this spring, used for this season (60 hrs); it has been docked at a marina for summer. On this model the Volvo DPS outdrive and transom ring are mostly submerged; maybe 1-1.5 inches stick out of the water at transom when water is perfectly calm.
When purchasing the boat this spring I installed my Humminbird GPS/FF transducer. When drilling small pilot hole I experienced a small mount of water. I went ahead and held a small shop vac to hole until no more water was evident; let it sit overnight, and all seemed well and dry. Continued with install, and have not given it another thought.
Now I'm thinking the leak described earlier has been occurring for some time before I purchased boat.
My gut tells me the water won't evaporate and take care of itself. Live in upstate NY and boat is home on a trailer.
What is my best plan of attack with this?
