I have a 1997 3 stroke 90 hp Honda, I just finished rebuilding the carbs and went to start it and nothing. Troubleshot everything and find out starter bad (rebuilt last year already), come to find out that somehow there is water getting to underside of the starter because you can see the rust. My question is has anyone seen this problem before and if so, what we be the cause and how would I go about fixing it so it doesn't occur again? rebuilding or buying a new starter is now cheap for Honda's

There is a seal that seals the verticalshaft to the mount case. Your is not sealing. You must replace this seal for the water to stop getting in. Requires pulling the powerhead unfortunately.

I am unsure of the official name, but it is a round seal. The outer diameter mates to the mount case, the inner diameter seals on the vertical shaft. There are only 2 seals there. One for the vertical shaft, the other for the shift shaft linkage.

There is a Honda service bulletin on that problem. It happened to my 75hp unit and Honda did all the work with parts and no charge to me. They even replaced the starter.

Re:Service bulletin #26 Sept 2003

There is no expiration on the service bulletin, I'll try and find it and give you the date it came out. Okay, looked into my file and found that the service bulletin #26, came out in Sept of 2003. You local Honda dealer will have it on file. Just call will your frame serial number and they can go into thier computor system and get all the history of your motor and the info on the service bulletin.
Good luck!
Nick
