Water ingestion problem. Need help

I have a pair of Mercury 225HP EFI (1995) on a Mako 293. The starboard engine ingested enough water to kill the engine while in rough water.
A purge of the separator and change of the engine filter got us home but, now, the engine will not make full power nor adequate fuel pressure on the gauge.
My Clymer mentions a "final filter" in the vapor separator may be dirty and this would make sense with the circumstances.
Is this an easy owner/amateur mechanic job?
Any other troubleshooting I should consider?
Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

Re: Water ingestion problem. Need help

Welcome to iboats.

Please define water ingestion. To me that would mean that water got into the lower cylinders from the exhaust or carbs, or from a bad head gasket. What you're describing sounds more like you have water in the fuel, at least in regards to servicing the fuel filters and draining the vapor seperator.

If you ingested enough water from sucking raw water into the cylinders to stop the motor, you need an overhaul. That would bend rods.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.
Water in the fuel. Don't know the origin of the water. Possibly condensation. It had been in the tank a while as it was rusty stuff. It overwhelmed the water separator/strainer and next the engine fuel filter. I guess I am lucky it only hit the starboard engine.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Matison
