I am dealing with the above engine that shows that it got water into cylinder no. 1 during normal operation. Does anyone know of any service bulletins on this engine? Any similar problems? The mechanic says that the block becomes porous and allows the water to come in from the cooling passages. Any info out there?
Email me at jim@boulandlaw.com

Cathell...you should do a compression test...#1 cylinder should test lower that the others...I would hope you might be able to retorque head, or replace head gasket...just a Thought

You could have a cracked block, but that is very rare. Most likely an oring cylinder seal failed, got pinched, etc. Your motor does not have headgaskets.

If it's #1 then most likely it's the famous glue seam leak. It's very common in the 60 degree motors but the 99 should be OK. I was at Precision Manufacturing back in January and Norm said they have perfected a fix. They remove the sleeve and weld the seam. Then they pressure test it.

The problem is that if you just find another block you may find the same problem. Especially if your motor tends to run warmer than normal (higher octane, old fuel, something other than Champion plugs, weak water pump ect).

Call the guys at Precision at 800-237-5947 and tell them what you have. I'm sure they can help.

Good luck!

DHadley,
You called this the "famous" leak? I heard there was an issue with this. Is this something the manufacturer has issued a bulletin on? Is this pretty common? You say that another block might have the same problem. To me, that indicates a common problem.
Thanks to all for your replies.
Jim

The 1991 models occasionally had the "famous leak", later ones had improved castings and, except for severely overheated motor, cracks are very very rare.

I gotta' agree with seahorse on this one, that was more of an "early block" problem. More often than not you'll find water in lower cylinders - loading on the trailer on a steep ramp "dunks" the motor briefly, that kind of thing. Haven't seen water in #1 in some time...

I suppose this could be your issue, but since the manufacturer is now bankrupt/gone out of business, not to mention the motor's probably 2 to 3 years out of warranty... Your best choice is probably to call Precision.

-John

Yep thats awfully new for a glue seam leak, Its so easy to pull the heads & have a look " check the O-rings, if 1 is bad, deck the heads throw in new o-rings and away you go.

Also as mentioned, water can be forced up the exhast from a number different ways.
