If the plug is left in a boat and it gets quite a bit of water in it, (nearly up to the top of the oil filter) will the water get into the bellows etc. and do damage to the drive?

yes it can, if yours did it remove and inspect the drive. last week I did a pair of bravoII's in a 33 maxum. damage was extensive enough that I replaced both drive shafts and the gimbal bearings. the hull had sat over a year while up for sale and the guy bought it without a mechanical inspection. bill was over 5000 dollars by the time I had it seaworthy again.
