Water intake location....?

Hello, I purchased a boat with a 1973 Evinrude Fisherman 6 hp motor, model 6302 and wanted to start it up in the dive using muffs. I checked a manual and noticed the area I usually put the muffs is called the water bypass plate. There is an area located within the exhaust housing called the intake, intake screen, and intake plug. Is this where the motor gets the water for cooling from or is it the usual place on the side of the gearcase above the catavation plate? I know I can run it for short periods without overheating but did not want to rebuild/replace the impeller and water pump internals if I do not have to. Thanks for the help....

Welcome!!!!
Not certain but I believe this motor does have a unique location for water inlet, and regular muffs are useless. Running it in a barrel full of water will cover you regardless of inlet position.
Good luck

You are right. It appears the intake is part of the main exhaust housing. Muffs of course do nothing. Will drag out the barrel and give it a go....

Thanks!!
