I just installed Johnson 88 outboard and want to test it. I will put the motor in a bucket with water...which one is the water intake... how far up must it be submerged in water before i can safely start it. I could use some prompt advise... thanks Chris 716667740

Re: Water intake

My answer is more of a question I suppose. I always like to see the water above the level that the pump housing is, so that I know that the housing is completely full of water. This is a considerable distance above the water intake hole. I do this because I am not really sure whether these pumps are self priming and I want to make sure it is primed.

So my question is ... is this caution necessary. It is usually on a little more water so I have always played it on the safe side. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I think as long as you dont over rev it and cause your motor to run away on you, you should be fine. Since muffs only cover the water intake hole, and most of us have been using them for years, i dont believe you need to completely submerge your bottom end, but i am still new like you, others with more experience may disagree.

You use muffs OR submerge the lower unit. You don't need to do both. Priming the pump is not an issue on muffs because water is forced into the engine under pressure. In and tank or tub it is not.

submerging and muffs allow you to run your motor without overheating however for tuning porpused(idle, timing, carb sync) it needs to be submerged to have backpressure on the exhaust.
