2001 Yamaha 115 2 stroke. Is it necessary to pull head covers to clean water jackets or can I just pull the water jacket covers off? I lossened up a couple of head bolts just to see if they were siezed. When the bolt was loosened there was a little salt on the threads. Same thing on water jacket covers. Any help or expertise would sure be welcomed. Thanks very much

Completely forgot to mention, I pulled both thermostat housing and could see some build up of salt and some other cruddy looking stuff in there, but didn't look blocked.

If wanting to use again remoived gasket will depend on the material it was fabricated. If thick enough can clean it well and put it back with a light coat of MegaGray Silicone at both sides. Grease lightly each bolt thread before screwing it back and torque it to specs.

If engine is not overheating to the extreme that when placing your plam on powerhead must remove it really fast, won't find any salt cloggs obstructing water passages. Engines that deals with salt water are natural salt collectors on all water passages and thermo as well.

Thanks buddy, I can leave my hand on it ( idling on yard for around 20 minutes) for probably 4-5 seconds until it's uncomfortably hot, but not to the point of burning my hand. Use a laser temp gun and read 120-125 on all four cylinder

Keep in mind that the torque spec is for a dry fastener, greasing it will change that

Cylinder head gasket/gaskets should not be re used again when pulled from powerhead, will be found compressed, hardened or overheated. Always install new ones for a perfect mating surfaces seal.

With respect to slightly grease general bolts one thing is putting huge mounts of grease on bolt's threads other putting very little portion on a clean or new bolt.

According to my experience tearing powerheads down to clean all water paths as when out of the box, when lightly greasing bolts have found very little torque difference due to grease rather by not re torquing head bolts back again when out of the box.

Bear in mind that OB's powerhead gaskets needs to be re torqued to factory specs soon after break end period has ended or soon after which must be done by dealer or qualified mechanic, gaskets will be somewhat compressed due to combustion heat and needs to work and seal again where once were torqued to when new or replaced, very few boaters, assume none performs a re torque work, that's with a high quality torque wrench not by hand.

To light grease a bolt, simply get a small round brush, dip it in triple guard grease and draw a fine grease line right in middle bolt, put it back in on cylinder head and torque bolt to specs and don't forget to re torque gasket back to specs soon after first 10-15 worked hour use if wanting OB to last for years to come in excellent shape.

I can't get this phone to download these dang pictures. I believe you can get to it with a drill and easy out (maybe).. it broke about halfway out and it's inside the water jacket cover. That probably don't help, but I appreciate it anyway. He can't look at it till next week so it'll give me something else to stress about over the weekend.

There are 2 escenarios : if bolt broke at middle or if broke right at base. If at middle will need to weld the extreme of a large T handle to upper broken bolt, heat the crankcase base where bolt exists and twist handle back an forth till broken piece is removed. If broken even at base will need to drill it very carefully so not to damge the internal threads.

If with no experience whatsoever, remove powerhead and take it to a machine shop as it's a very precise skilled work. That's why I always slight grease all the bolts that secures, lids, caps, heads, etc, will remove them easily any time.

Will need to remove the whole cover, that means remove all bolts, you'll be extremely lucky if you don't break more bolts in the intent, good luck..
