I have a 99 Johnson 90hp , last year I had the water pump replaced and they also had to take of the head to replace a scored piston.

I never went out with the boat since, now last week end I took it out for the first time and the engine runs perfect but when I fluched it at home with the mufs on i noticed water comming from under the cowling.
I too one part of the lower cowling of and noticed a water leak from under the enginehead base in the middle and at the transom side. Can somebody help me on where the water could be comming from, otherwise I will have to pull the head.

Thanks

Sounds alot like powerhead to adapter gasket.

I fixed one , too much water pressure on hose caused it to start leaking.

Its real hard to tell when powerhead is installed.

I'll bet thats what it is. No big problem to replace.

While your at it if their not new , replace the thermostats.

Alot easier with the powerhead off.

You said had to take off head, you meant powerhead.

Cant replace piston any othwer way.

Well they pulled the head today and found the problem.

The metal plate at the top of the inner exhaust housing ( where the powerhead mounts on ) there is a small amount of metal corroded away and therefor the gasket wasn't seated properly and exhaust fumes and water was comming out thru there.

Now they will try to put some bonding metal or something like that on the corroded metal to make a smooth surface again and then put the gasket on there.

One of the 2 part epoxies , should do the trick.

I'd build it up , more then necessary and sand down flat.

Good-Luck,
