I recently replaced a regulator/rectifier on a 1996 Johnson 115hp 60degree motor. Charges great but a week or so later I have a problem starting, the bendix is sticking. I also notice some light corrosion near the starter to timing cover area.

Off comes the timing cover and wow it's crusty in there, I've had the flywheel off before and it was spotless in there. I suspect the gasket on the regulator. When I get the bendix somewhat freed up and everything back together my suspicions are confimed, water shooting out of the forward part of the regulator gasket, right under the timing cover.

Here are some pics. my question is how to fix the aluminum, will jb weld or marine tex work or can I get away with loading it with rtv? I'm concerned about the repair giving way and getting lodged in the smaller passages near the head.

It looks like a gasket plus some silicone would fix it.

Clean the gasket surfaces, apply the silicone on both sides of the gasket, and install the gasket and regulator and install but do not tighten the bolts. Wait 15 min for the silicone to partially set up, and then tighten the bolts to spec. Wait for the silicone to completely cure before use.

Thanks, I put just a bit of JB in there to give the gasket something to rest on. It's difficult to see in the pics but there just wasn't much material left. The rtv on both sides and waiting before snugging down the bolts made a great seal.
