I'm working on a '85 Evinrude 120 hp model E120TLCO. I just resealed the gearcase and installed a new water pump. All that sees to work just fine. I should say that I bought this boat/engine a couple months ago and don't know much of the history. I have not had it on the water yet. I'm checking just about everything because it hasn't been registered since '96.

While checking the lower unit on the muffs I noted a slight water leak (a few drips) between the power head and the exhaust housing adaptor at the rear of the engine. I haven't check the bolts yet as I ran out of light. I know this is a short coming but wonder if it is a major concern? I would appricate any feed back.

Also is fixing this problem that big of a deal? I used to build jet engines, race cars and all that stuff so the mechanics don't scare me. I just haven't tackled one of these yet. Any supprises I should know about. My OMC manual does a pretty good job for a generic set of pictures.

Thanks.

It may well be the bolts but if it isnt its not a big deal to pop the powerhead off and replace the gasket. You shouldn't have to remove anything -- just disconnect the shift linkage. Be sure to use the OE gasket. This is one of those deals that an aftermarket may not be the "same as".

Be sure to lift the powerhead stright up from the top of the flywheel.

Good luck!

easy to do - i just re did mine.
get some gasket remover, a good putty knife and some alcohol with rags to clean the suface up.
-
lift it straight up. while you are at it replace the upper o-ring on drive shaft.
