engine starts and water is coming out of the thermostat wire next to # 1 spark plug, is that a replacable part?

Sorry the motor is a 1990 Merc 40hp 4cylinder SN OC225906

Sounds like that might be the heat sensor which is replaceable. Always tell us the motor specs so we know exactly what you are referring. to.

If its the crossflow 40,that is the water jacket gasket and yes its replaceable and replacement part # is 27-856729. If its the looper 2 cylinder the casting is cracked as water jacket is molded on to block.
