Okay, this is my second post on here (no replies on my first post).
I dropped the lower unit on my Evinrude to change the impeller. While it was apart, I hooked a garden hose to one of the water tubes going up into the powerhead, turned the water on - very slowly - and had water come out of the other tube. However, I also got water coming down from where the shift rod comes down. I am somewhat concerned about this. Do I need to pull the powerhead to see what is going on here? Is there a seal that has been blown? Or should I not be so concerned about it. The engine has not overheated to my knowledge.
Thank you to anyone who can help on this issue.

Eldon

Re: Water leakage in '68 85hp evinrude?

What you described is normal for all outboards so dont be worried. The water you see coming out of there is the motors main cooling waste water, only a small amount of water cooling your motor is coming out of the "pee hole" or upper exhaust and most of that water is coming out off the center of the propellor where main exhaust also is situated. So when you have lower-end off and you push the water in the tube where waterpump is (when lower unit normally placed) connecting the cooling water is coming down back around that pipe after it has been cooling your motor.
