Hello, I am looking for information concerning what to do about this leak. I saw in a thread on here there is a bypass option, to totally remove this part. I am not sure the reason to bypass this valve or what the part does. I wanted to ask others on here that have more experience, what I should be doing. I recently replaced the starboard side head, the thermostats, and the lower unit on this engine. I have about 500 into the engine and would prefer to keep it running. I am trying to tune the thing to make it run a little more reliably. I saw some where that I could take the water line from the Starboard head and put it straight to the tell tale, and the other line is often used as a water pressure line, any thoughts?

Check shop.evinrude.com, look up your motor and you should find parts to repair that leaking valve.

I did find the seal, it is 20 bucks. Not too expensive I am curious about the bypass option, is it the right thing to do? Or just fix it the stock way? It is probably the best thing to do to fix it stock, just wondering what the bypass option does?

Maintains better temps and cooling on each bank...

that makes sense that there would be a reason for it. How exactly is it done?

Faztbullet is the expert on this, he can correct me if I steer you wrong at all. That valve you're talking about is the water control valve, what it does is to route water pressure to the back side of the thermostat diaphragm at low throttle settings to keep the thermostats seated. At higher rpms water pressure is released from the back of the thermostat diaphragm, allow the thermostats to come off their seat which in turns allow more water flow through the heads etc.

The modification involves removing the flow control valve and all associated water lines, and removing the thermostat covers and diaphragms. You'll then install thermostat covers, springs, and gaskets from a 1990 70 hp engine (you can use the existing thermostats).

Thanks Metric, I appreciate all the info. I just recently put a good used head on my stbd side, new thermostats and diaphragms, a good used lower end. My engine hasn't received much love lately and I as I get it into better shape I am trying to get everything taken care of. I think I am going to just replace that seal on the valve and leave everything stock, seems to be the best way. If that doesn't work out I will start going the other direction with getting the other parts and making the change.
