Water leaking out of lower cowl 77 15hp evinrude.

I have a 1977 evinrude that I just put a new impeller in. It pumps great now but water is leaking out a drain hole in the lower cowl. Is this a common problem? And would it most Likely be the head gasket. I'm trying to get this motor back to a friend but I guess he'll have to wait, unless this is something simple like a cracked water line or something.

got any picts? my only guess would be the small rubber seal for the water tube where it enters the bottom of the power head, or the powerhead gasket. a pict would help. im sure others here will chime with other ideas.

Here is where it's leaking. I think it coming out of the plastic 90 fitting for the tell tail. But it's underneath it, and in a very tight spot. Would it be fine to leave it alone? It drips fast as rpm increases. And I don't want him out in the middle of the lake with a cowl filled with water. It's dripping a low to mid, but at full till it might be like a fire hose in there.

What are the chances of me getting this fitting out and intact. If it's cracked near the threads it'll just break off I would assume. Normally you could just put a screw driver in there and back the broken piece out but there is 1/2" of clearance, between it and the lower cowl. Any one out there have any tricks for this? I really don't want to remove this power head, just for this.

ok, yes i think the power head needs to be removed to replace the elbow.

You could always do the drill a hole in the cover trick. Works pretty good to remove exhaust covers.
