I flush my 115hp Johnson (1996) outboard after each time using the boat in salt water. Where is it normal or ok to see water coming out from when flushing the system? I have water that is leaking through the joint between the lower unit casing and the shaft on one side. Another place, a bit harder to explain since I do not know the proper name is from behind the metal casing approximately 4" x 5" attached to the shaft directly above the joint described above and is held on by 4 bolts. Water only coming from behind one of these (there is one on each side).

Common sense says this shouldnt happen and should be more water tight. Any help would be greatly appreciated before taking the next plunge into salt water.

Relax. Common sense doesn't count on this. It's normal.

The water coming from the seam was destined to come out through the prop hub anyway. The seam is supposed to be sealed whenever the lower unit is removed, but hardly anybody does it, so it leaks. It's only a cosmetic problem.

The other water is coming from the hole in the water pump that the drive shaft passes through. It is deliberatly drained off so it doesn't rise up and get into the powerhead bearings.

I know this is old post but just got first motor and boat and you are the only post that contains the same leaking issue behind the 4 bolt mounting plate. Did you conclude that this was normal. Thank you
