water level and kicker motors?

Hey folks,

I am wondering where the water level/line should be situated on a 1979 4 hp Johnson kicker? I understand that it should be somewhere just above the cavator? Is this correct? Are we talking about an inch or two above? What would happen if it is several inches above or even a bit below?

Thanks!

Re: water level and kicker motors?

Above, no problem. If below you might not get enough water in the pump. The pump must, at all times (and with all engines) be fully submerged in water. If you have just a little water covering it you run the risk of it not always being submerged. I would recommend a kicker plate that you can set the motor lower in the water with. Lower than your transom will allow if you don't have it deep enough off the transom. I hope this helps. I'm guessing you are trying to use a short shaft kicker on a twenty inch transom? Best of luck. Rick.
