Hello,

I have a 94 maxum boat with a 4.3 mercruiser. I purchased this boat from an auction and when I got it home i checked the oil and it was milky as if it was mixing with water along with 2 freeze plugs under the engine mounts were blown out and cracked exhaust manifolds. So I changed the oil and freeze plugs and started the boat, now after about 40 seconds of running it I noticed that there was steamy water and oil mix coming out the valve cover breather on the Starboard side of the boat and only a mix out of the dipstick. So the next day i took the intake off and put water through the water ports on the heads (the two front ports on the heads) and the mix started to over flow out of the dip stick (engine was not running prior to this test). What do you think the problem could be? What should I do next?

the valley in the intake are known to freeze and crack also on a 4.3. But i agree bet it's the block.

When you say you purchased it from an auction was it an estate?...repo?

The reason everyone is so quick to say cracked block is lack of winterization. When you pull a boat out of the water there is still water remaining in the engine. If it isn't flushed out thoroughly it will freeze during the winter months. Frozen water expands and has incredible force...enough to crack forged and cast metals. A head gasket problem will have some of the symptoms you describe. But that much mixing of the oil and water is most likely a cracked block due to lack of winterization. If it was a repo you purchased from an auction my first thought is the person who had it couldn't afford to make the payments and probably couldn't afford to have it winterized.

It sucks for sure. Hope you got a great deal on it.

Re: Water oil mixing

ok so lets get to it. They are not freeze plugs but " casting plugs "

You bought a boat sight unseen, and didn't run it before you layed down your money?

This is a '94 boat, and you know nothing of what has been done to it over the years?

And then you asked our opinion? So heres mine again, cracked water jacket in the motor. Replace everything but the starter, alternator, carb. maybe.

And the cheapest way without re-gearing the drive is to go with a 4.3
