i have a 1985 45 hp commercial outboard. this weekend i noticed when i launched my boat, and started the motor, there was no water coming out of the outlet. i took the hose off and blew down threw it. after that all was good. could this have been a blockage or is there something else going on?

Could have been blockage, sounds like it.

When was water pump rebuilt last ?

If you don't know , its time to do it.

Then you'll know its , OK.

May want to do thermo's while your at it.

i don't know. i've only had the motor a few months. i'm going to do a winter tear down after the season. new water pump, etc. by the way, where would the sending unit be for engine heat? i'm looking at some guages for this baby too.

Re: water outlet.

If you have a temp. guage , it should be mounted , where it contacts the head .

If your going to add a guage or two , a water pressure guage would be first on my list .

Followed by a tach, really both are IMHO, mandatory.

The temp guage , while nice to have , isn't a must like the two i mentioned.

Press. guage helps monitor water pump condition .

Where a temp guage , by itself , only tells you its running too hot.

Which is alot of times , too little too late.

The overheat horn sensor is mounted in the water jacket cover on the head.

It should have an orange wire coming from it.
