Water (pee) temp.....

Does anyone know about how hot the pee stream should be on a 2000 merc carbed 200hp. I can put my hand under the stream for a minute or 3, then it heats up to the point to where you can only hold your hand under the stream for 2-4 seconds. When holding a thermomater under it, it stays pretty consistant with the temp gauge. When my temp gauge gets up to 135-145, it is hard to hold your hand under the stream. Is this normal, or should the stream be cooler???? EDIT: I have seen some motors that pee a cool stream all the time. Which is normal?

What is the temp setting on the thermostat in your engine? I would think that the pee water would reach and surpass that temp by a few degrees, just to get the thermostat to open. Then it may continue upward for 10 to 30 degrees, depending on efficiency of the cooling system.

Different engines have different thermostats. Ranging from about 115 to 160, maybe some even higher.

Thermostats are probably the 143deg t-stats and a temp of 140-145 is fine. These engines have the telltale after the thermostats flow will start out slow and build until operating temp is reached. As long as you have good flow you should be fine.

RFish

The flow has always been ...ok, i guess. It is better when reved up or in gear, over 2000 rpms. At idle, it has always just squirt and sputterd. Dont get me wrong, it has water coming out, but my buddy has a '02 Johnson 200, and it pees hard , all the time. So i am not sure if mine is normal.

P*S - Funny you should mention this about the Johnson's stream. I saw a guy unload, and start a fairly new 150 HP Johnson yesterday. The thing that caught my eye was that the stream was flowing strong while the engine was turning over on the starter (before it was even running). My Merc, and the other ones I checked yesterday all took afew seconds after the engines started before the stream started. I guess this is just the way Johnsons are.

Your Merc sounds just like my 9.8 Merc.
The T-stat on mine is 140 degrees so water shooting out the tell tale is the same.
Mine also sputters water out the tell tale.
I've been told thats normal.
My Johnson on the other hand shoots warm water in a constant steady stream.
I would say your Mercury sounds fine to me.
