Water pouring out! Please help!!!

I am re-trying this under a different title hoping others will look at it more readily.

Engine is a '83 115hp Johnson.

Ok Guys - I am pretty much finished with my rebuild - MANY THANKS to all of you who have given me very good pointers and walked me through!!!!!

Ok - I got everything hooked up tonight and turned the key......it actually started! (That surprised me a little).

BUT....I saw water pouring out from behind the lower cover where the lower unit/exhaust shaft meets the powerhead. I took off the cover and started again. Water is pouring out the hole just behind/below where the steering unit bolts into the lower unit. What's missing here because I don't think this is normal.

There was no water coming into where the powerhead sits/meets the lower unit inside the main motor cover.

On the other thread someone suggested maybe due to high water pressure on the muffs??

Advice please.

Thanks,
SM

One other thing I just saw upon further inspection - At the very bottom where the bottom section of the lower unit bolts onto the rest of the shaft water is weeping out in the front. I guess ther may be a gasket there that must be replaced? I will probably replace the impeller while I am at it? Water is coming out the pee hole just fine though.

If you are thinking of where I am thinking, water coming out the joint is not unusual, or harmful. In fact there usually is a deliberate drain hole at the forward end. The seam is supposed to be sealed with sealer when you put it together, but most people probably don't bother.

Oh good. That's a relief. I am assuming you are referring to the second post I add about it coming out at the bottom?

Anybody else want to chime in on the ton of water coming out the top??

Thanks,

Re: Water pouring out! Please help!!!

Ok - I gave it another look over tonight. The heads are very hot to the touch, and the block even more so.

I am now wondering if I put the thermostats in backwards or maybe a water passage blocked by gel seal somehow?

Water is coming out the pee hole, but today seemed to take a while for it to come out 20 seconds or so. I shut off the motor and turned up the hose and it came out quicker then - maybe didn't have it up high enough?

Water is still coming out both sides of the exhaust housing at the top.

when you lowered the powerhead to the exhaust housing are you sure you got the studs through the gasket cleanly?i had to do it twice by myself which sucked because i tweaked the gasket.maybe a last resort check because of all the work involved to see.good luck

The gasket is good- I had my hoss of a younger brother do all the lifting while I did the guiding. It's actually leaking below that gasket where there is an opening in the front side.

I know it is a very poor description...I am going to try to post a pic tomorrow for better explanation.

I am guessing it is a thermostat installation error. I may just remove them and fire it back up.

I know you dont want to hear it,BUT,I truly believe something happened to your powerhead gasket,ALSO,there are 2 different gaskets for v-4 ,one for the smaller HP ,and one for the 135 140,been a while for me,but unless you can see the water pouring into the pan from something obvious, like a thermo hose,I have to think the gasket is leaking, are you SURE all the old gasket was cleaned off, both sides ,I use sealer,as for the thermos in backward,no,the cover wouldnt go over them,I hope Im wrong, but it seems obvious.

Re: Water pouring out! Please help!!!

See my May 30 reply. I still say you have a problem down in the water pump. Way too much water escaping up through the drive shaft hole in the pump housing. Very bad seal in the housing, or no seal, or whatever. It is pumping water into the isolating enclosure that the drive shaft runs in and overflowing out the vent hole at the top.

I can't vision any problems with the thermostat or upper gaskets causing that.

That is my 2 cents for whatever it is worth. (2 cents)

Re: Water pouring out! Please help!!!

Ok - I finally had some time today to fart around with it. Mikesea is right about the thermostats, I took them out and the problem was still there.

Imported - I am thinking you are probably right abuot the gasket - make sense. Maybe next weekend.

One other thing - I notice that the left head gets very hot to the touch very quickly and the right one does not. I am talking about in 10-15 seconds of engine running.

I disconnected both over heat sensor wires last week and found that my overheat horn does not work either.

Thanks for replying,

Re: Water pouring out! Please help!!!

I thought I would throw this up one more time before I rip into the lower unit. Imported FR makes sense in what he is saying - just wondering if anybody ever experienced this same thing before.

How about the head getting hot - would the water coming out the exhaust port cause this? Maybe it's not getting to the block to recirculate?

After all this time and money on a rebuild, I would love to actually try my boat out again!

Re: Water pouring out! Please help!!!

There are two gaskets one between the Powerhead and adaptor plate the other is between the exhaust housing (inner) to the adaptor plate. The cause could be the gasket between the exhaust housing inner to the adaptor. My 75 hp had both missing and when the engine was running it would spray water under the hood causing the lower coil to fail. Not to mention the salt water that is getting sucked into the carbs will trash them and the bearings quick. Look for exhaust leaking from the area that may be a sign that this gasket is leaking.

Re: Water pouring out! Please help!!!

OK - I followed Imported's advice and replaced the water pump. Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem. At least I don't have to worry about that when I get it running again.

Any new takers? The only other thing I know to do at this point is pull the powerhead back off. I didn't want to do this, but it seems that I have ran out of options.

By the way, there is a noticable difference in the temperature (to the touch) between the left and right heads. The left one is much hotter.

Anybody now what might be blocking water flow into that side of the engine? The only thing I can think of.

Thanks,
SM

Re: Water pouring out! Please help!!!

did you take out the water deflectors during rebuild?maybe didnt get them back in causing temp. issue.it really sux you have to remove powerhead, at least all the bolts are clean and ready to be removed.good luck keep cool and get this ironed out.
