Water pressure gauge question

I have an 89' Sea Nymph Fishing machine and I had a merc 9.9 on it. The water pressure gauge never moved even though I had the impeller replaced every two years. I now have a 50 hp on it that I have not hooked up to the gauge yet. The line is clear. If I blow into the line I can get the gauge to move to about 3. What are the chances the gauge is working. Am I better off just getting a new gauge?

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Water pressure gauge question

The gauge is working, you just tested it by making it move w/ your blowing in it. Hook it up it should work if hooked to the correct place, There should be water coming out if you losten the fitting on the line. Good luck, Joe

You must connect the pressure fitting into the water jacket somewhere...

Where is it (or where was it previously)...?

On the 9.9 there is a T right before the pee hole. It looks like I would have to cut the hose and put the t in the same place on the 50. Is that correct or is that why I was not getting any pressure?

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Water pressure gauge question

Agreed the gauge is working properly if you can blow about 3 PSI. Depending on the year of the motor, they had a port on the block with a plug in it from the factory. The plug can be removed and either a temp gauge or pressure gauge can be connected to the port.

There is a small pipe plug on your motor.
It is located on top of the engine, about 2 inches in front of the thermostat cover. Remove it, replace it with a small brass 90* fitting that will accept the tubing on the other end. Attach the tubing.

It is part number 20 in this link.

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...nbr=1696&bnbr=9&bdesc=CYLINDER+BLOCK+ASSEMBLY

yep, roscoe is correct...

Connecting the the guage hose to the hose for the pee hole will not give you much of a reading at all... You need to go into the water jacket.
