water pressure problem

I recently purchased a 96' 130hp Johnson and the boat has a pressure guage but bearly reads anything, I have read that the guage should be connected to an adapter plate not the tell tale. My question is what is the adapter plate? I don't see anywhere else to tie it in or is the adapter plate something I need to add.

Any help would be appreciated.

Peter, On my '98 Johnny 150HP V6 there was a threaded plug on the port head. I installed the water pressure gauge there.

BTW- with a new impeller I get 30+PSI at WOT.

The adapter plate is the plate on which the engine sits. It is located between the engine and the miidsection.

On the V4 loopers that I have seen, the tell-tale exits from the adapter plate.

The OMC/BRP water pressure kits have a T to cut into the tell-tale line.

Edit: The diagram is for your specific model motor. The photo is my engine - different model, same base. .

Thanks, I found the port, it now has a small steel plug in it. I will remove and connect the guage to this port.

If you attach your tubing there, be sure to route the tube to the top of the engine before running it to the helm so that air does not get into the cooling circuit.

One other thing, that hole is a 1/8" NPT standard thread, so don't re-tap it.

I got the fittings and connected tonight, am getting 10psi at idol which is much better that the 3psi I got before. Thanks for all the help and will send pictures as requested.
